Also out this week:
There's a sun-scorched propulsion to this lo-fi electronic sidestep by Lael Neale - her switch to motorik omnichord pays off dividends with gold-splashed glimmers littering her delightful, folk-informed palette. Jenny Hval continues her dreamlike sonic explorations, breathing fresh life into the blurred boundaries of ambient, electropop, spoken word, and experimental - stick it on and sink into the silvery mist. Samantha Crain must have more hours in the day than the rest of us mere mortals - somehow she manages to squeeze in being an exceptional alt-folk artiste alongside 4(!) other jobs, and that she achieves this high level of songwriting whilst avoiding total burnout suggests that she can only be superhuman. Twisting evermore towards the dancefloor, Model/Actriz have retained the nerve-shattering energy that first enamoured us to them - they've cranked the dials right up to 10 and come across like Jamie Stewart raving over explosive, caffeine-soaked, jittering electronics. This is dancefloor-claiming music for people who don't usually feel at home on the dancefloor. In the words of Trent Reznor - "if you're here for a good time, that was those other guys - we're here to have a bad time."
In addition to all of that, Pink Floyd take a trip to Pompeii, Esther Rose has a want (and it's signed), Suzanne Vega is flying with angels, you'll be safe with Newdad, and at peace with Propaghandi, Andy Bell has 10 crowns he'd like to share out (signed & all!), Captain Beefheart has replicated his trout mask, Jane Weaver is travelling the silver globe, Electric Wizard are up to their old perversions, Car Seat Headrest have received an education, and it's been 10 years of 36 seasons for Ghostface Killah!
