Mid Year Staff Picks 2024

our favourite releases of the year so far

Hot Off The Press!

printed booklet - £0.01

The selections contained within these pages are the pick of the bunch from the first 6 months of the year. According to us anyway. The cream of the crop. The cat’s knees. The bee’s pyjamas. These are the records that we’ve been going back to over and over again.

Hopefully you’ve heard some of them. Maybe some are new to you. It could be a nudge to finally check out that band that everyone’s been talking about. Or it might even tempt you to revisit that album which didn’t quite land first time round. Whatever listening situation you might find yourself in, we hope that you find plenty here to explore, enjoy and enhance your sonic life with!

Unglee Izi

MUSIQUE de L’A.S.M.A.-CHRONOS de TELEHOR et SPACE MODULATOR - Plan I, II, III, IV

Absolutely astounding sound design work from a true master. This delves into cobwebbed corners of your brain, lighting them up with intricate twists of piano, field recordings, and strings before crushing everything with crumbling slabs of immaculate distortion. A journey like no other.

Moor Mother
The Great Bailout

lp - £23.99

cd - £11.99

Turning her attentions to one of British history’s many darkspots, Moor Mother razes shame with full-throated rage that burns, burns, burns with noise poetics, dazzling plaits of jazz, and all-engulfing deep electronics. Whichever direction she shifts, Moor Mother always leads the way.

Fyear
Fyear

180g lp + poster + download - £25.99 cd - £12.99

A whirlwind of words and blustering compositions. For an album that fuses politically-engaged spoken word with racing avant-jazz instrumentals, this is a hell of a lot of fun. It’s all over the musical map yet somehow always compelling as it rips and roars its way from one far out state to the next.

Bardo Pond
Volume 9

lp - £21.99

That it’s taken nigh on two decades for these recordings to finally see the light of day is testament to the mind-boggling and outrageous volume of music that t’Pond have up their collective sleeves. Lock into this and watch your Id, your Ego, and your Super Ego gradually disappear.

Adrianne’s done it again! This record houses a collection of timeless and emotive songs in a most understated and cool/Lenker manner. The perfect soundtrack to an evening walk. It hits all the feels.

Tapir!
The Pilgrim, Their God And The King Of My Decrepit Mountain

limited black lp - £23.99

A stunning almost 45 minutes of heavenly (fitting) narrative-led folk, that I’ve often found myself returning to as the year has progressed.Tapir! elevate you as they smother you in serenity and leave a lingering sense of optimism

Lime Garden
One More Thing

limited "reign in blood" lp - £22.99

limited blue lp - £22.99
cd - £11.99

An epic debut from the Brighton legends! This record feels incredibly significant in a new era of pop music that doesn’t get rid of any guitar hooks, riffs or grit. I think we’ll likely be looking back on this as a classic in its field.

Mount Kimbie
The Sunset Violent

black lp - £24.99

This one’s been on repeat on the office stereo. I have to admit, I hadn’t dabbled in the Mount Kimbie world before but this record’s got me hooked. Tinged with 90s distortion and tilting into a land of avant-pop, that I’m all for!

Kim Gordon
The Collective

limited coke bottle green lp - £23.99
lp - £22.99
cd - £12.99

Unapologetic, spiky, witty, full of swagger... Challenging too at times but hugely rewarding. Quite brilliant from a genuine noise-making supremo. Message received Kim!

Beth Gibbons
Lives Outgrown

140g black lp + 4pp booklet + download - £22.99

cd - £12.99

There’s real elegance, class and poise right throughout this album. Supreme song writing, perfect production for Gibbons’ very particular vocal renderings. Beautifully balanced. This is a sublime piece of work

Shellac
To All Trains

Damn this sounds great! Really great! For me it’s nigh as good as ‘1000 Hurts’. The question is, who’s going to fill his shoes; can anybody? Music has lost a gem, an innovator and a genius of audio engineering. RIP Steve.

Sheherazaad
Qasr

limited red lp - £22.99

lp - £21.99

Fragile, sensitive and mellifluous vocals nestling in rich soundscapes; indeed, all that one might expect from an Erased Tapes release. This has it in bundles. This was the first standout release of the year for me.

Kim Gordon 'I'm A Man'

Lime Garden
One More Thing

limited "reign in blood" lp - £22.99

limited blue lp - £22.99
cd - £11.99

Lime Garden’s debut album is filled to the brim with indie pop goodness! It’s been wonderful to watch this talented group grow exponentially in popularity. ‘One More Thing’ is just the beginning for Lime Garden and I can’t wait to hear what’s next!

Mount Kimbie
The Sunset Violent

black lp - £24.99

I have Ewan to thank for introducing me to Mount Kimbie. Deep basslines combine with swirling synth melodies and nonchalant vocals to create something amazing. Their set at Primavera was just incredible

Kali Malone
All Life Long

2lp in gatefold sleeve with 8pp booklet - £33.99

cd with 16pp booklet - £15.99

Almost two hours of organ drone isn’t something I normally find myself listening to but ‘All Life Long’ is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. There’s something between the sound that I can’t put myfinger on, something very special.

Van Houten
The Tallest Room

baby pink lp - £19.99

Multiple eras of inspiration boil down into a refined display of shoegaze, psychedelia and motorik noise. Guitar harmonies effortlessly slide in and out of focus and create a whirling bed of sound for soft vocals to sit above.

Tapir!
The Pilgrim, Their God And The King Of My Decrepit Mountain

limited black lp - £23.99

In a world full of taxes and Tories, sometimes some escapism to a land of fantastical beasts is what you need. Tapir!’s debut provides just that, immersing you in a sea of sweet indie folk songs as you follow a pilgrim’s journey. I just can’t wait to hear more from them.

Adrianne Lenker
Bright Future

limited recycled colour lp - £23.99

lp - £22.99

cd - £11.99

It’s fair to say Adrianne has cemented herself as one of the best, if not the best, songwriters of this generation with this album. Opener ‘Real House’ is beyond soul crushing in beauty and sadness, and the album just rolls on from there in the same fashion. From Big Thief to this, she can do no wrong right now.

Mannequin Pussy
I Got Heaven

limited indies magenta & smoke colour lp - £26.99

lp - £22.99

cd - £9.99

The Philly natives deliver their own slice of heaven, mixing indie pop with hardcore punk in seamless fashion. Designed to be played at the highest volume possible, it’ll be blasting from my speakers for the rest of the year.

Billie Eilish
Hit Me Hard And Soft

recycled black lp in gatefold sleeve - £31.99

cd - £13.99

If the term ‘popstar’ didn’t already apply to Billie, then there’s no question this cements her in the upper echelons. Her connection with brother Finneas proves fruitful once again, with intimate moments as well as pop bangers throughout.

Lime Garden
One More Thing

limited "reign in blood" lp - £22.99

limited blue lp - £22.99

Released early in the year, but not forgotten, as it’s rarely off my playlist. ‘Love Song’ is indie pop perfection.

Gossip
Real Power

limited indies 180g pink lp - £34.99

180g lp - £26.99

cd - £13.99

A 12 year break and they’re back with a stomping album of great tracks. Ditto’s voice is as soulful and raw as ever. Catchy hooks, disco beats, and summer singalong ‘Edge of the Sun’ puts this release top of my list.

St. Vincent
All Born Screaming

limited indies red lp - £27.99
black lp - £25.99
cd - £13.99

A contender for my favourite St Vincent album. You can’t help but make ‘Bond Theme’ comparisons on ‘Violent Times’, Prince will be getting his heavenly groove on to ‘Big Time Nothing’, and ‘Flea’ is classic Annie Clark. Love it.

Danger Mouse& Jemini
Born Again

limited indies pacific blue lp - £24.99

lp - £24.99

cd - £11.99

Danger Mouse working his magic once again, this time with rapper Jemini The Gifted One. This album was actually made 20 years ago but never released, and it’s absolutely worth the wait! Funk, soul and samples galore.

Gossip 'Edge Of The Sun'

Alkaline Trio
Blood, Hair and Eyeballs

black lp - £22.99
cd - £12.99

Despite being released in January, I knew from the firs tlisten that this album would be the one to beat. As a long-time fan, it brought me back to that giddy joy of first discovery and reignited my love of all things ‘Trio. I could go on, but my word count is up - you’re just going to have to trust me and listen!

Hot Water Music
Vows

limited leaf green lp - £32.99

cd - £16.99

Chuck Ragan and the gang are back, with an absolutely stacked line-up of guest appearances on an album filled with solid punk rock/post-hardcore bangers, to once again prove (even after 30 years as a band) that only Hot Water Music can do what Hot Water Music does.

Laura Jane Grace
Hole In My Head

limited black lp - £21.99
cd - £11.99

I’m probably biased, as I’d happily listen to anything Laura Jane Grace had a hand in creating, but she never disappoints! Nobody captures raw vulnerability and passion in quite the same way and ‘Hole In My Head’ is no different.

Bleachers
Bleachers

limited indies blue 2lp - £25.99 limited clear 2lp - £24.99

The perfect album of summer pop hits - best experienced in the car, windows down and wind in your hair. You don’t even need a real car, just get a hairdryer and close your eyes - the music will do the rest.

Kinbrae

Cryptophasia

lp - £25.99

A painstakingly crafted layering of modular synths, field recordings, & live instrumentation, there’s a quietly symphonic qualit yto these deeply personal, amniotic pieces.

Chelsea Wolfe
She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She

limited colour lp - £32.99

cd - £14.99

Always experimenting with different lenses to project her inky goth-pop through, this record sees Chelsea trying on trip-hop & industrial styles & she wears the hell out of ‘em!

Keaton Henson
Somnambulant Cycles

lp - £23.99

Whether he’s whispering quietly devastating nothings in my ear or going instrumental (as he does here), Henson’s instinct for creating gut-punching, lyrical noises borders on superhuman.

Full Earth
Cloud Sculptors

limited clear 2lp - £31.99

cd - £13.99

I’m not a very psych-y or prog-y person but I thought this was a bit of a ripper, especially with those thundering drums exploding out of its peaceful, bucolic passages.

Four Tet ‘Three’

Not Me But Us ‘Two’

St. Vincent
All Born Screaming

limited indies only red lp - £27.99 black lp - £25.99

cd - £13.999

‘Violent Times’ would have made an iconic Bond theme and when someone sets themselves on fire for their album artwork you buy it - it’s only polite.

Lynks
Abomination

limited black lp + download - £23.99 cd - £14.99

Lynks live is something else, the album is just what’s keeping me going ‘til the next tour, like a big 12” nicotine patch.

Charli XCX
brat

cd - £12.99

It’s just a hell of a lot of fun. Don’t judge it by the album artwork. It’s fine guys, let her cook let’s just have fun :-)

Beth Gibbons
Lives Outgrown

140g black lp + 4pp booklet + download - £22.99

cd - £12.99

Well worth the long wait for this first proper solo album. A thought provoking contemplation on middle age - what’s gone before... what lies ahead. Virtuoso instrumentation combined with Beth’s haunting voice results in an incredibly moving body of work.

Phosphorescent
Revelator

limited indies black ice lp - £28.99

lp - £27.99

cd - £14.99

I’m a sucker for a sad song. Add in copious amounts of melancholy slide guitar and a smattering of plaintive violin and you’ve got me hooked. This album has it all. Outstanding.

Plantoid
Terrapath

super limited eco lp - £25.99

It’s a bit prog rock and has quite a retro vibe yet it feels current and fresh. Some of it is quite heavy, some is a bit jazzy. It’s very hard to categorise but I know I like it!

The Smile
Wall Of Eyes

black lp in gatefold sleeve - £26.99 cd - £12.99

Another cryptic, haunting, multi-layered collection of songs from Thom and co. You can listen to it again and again and hear something new every time.

The Collective

limited coke bottle green lp - £23.99

lp - £22.99

cd - £12.99

Dirge-y guitars, trap beats & a nod to the skewered pop Ciccone Youth messed with on ‘The Whitey Album’. Loving this record more with every listen.

Shellac
For All Trains

So good it makes Albini’s passing even more tragic. Gutted these songs will never be played live... But what a way to go out.

Beak>
>>>>

cd - £11.99

Timeless collection of wonky synth-prog dropped from outer space with minimal warning. Best album cover of the year so far too.

Modern Technology
Conditions Of Worth

very limited clear "utility yellow" lp + stickers + download - £19.99

Ridiculously addictive slab of sludgy noise-rock - it’s massive. Somehow created by just two humans. One of those rare records that’s universally approved by us shop floor staff.
